Thedford School Prospectus:
Thedford Public Schools is a combination of a Class VI high school,
grade 7-12, and a Class I elementary school, grades K-6. The
elementary school also includes the Peaceful Plains school located
southwest of Thedford. The Brownlee school district affiliated
with Thedford High School in 1969 and is also included as a part of the
High School district.
The first school in Thedford was opened in 1889. School was held
in a building in the west part of town known for many years as the
Sprague House. Later, a two-story building was constructed on the
same location as the present elementary school. About 1917, a
country school was moved in and attached to the main building. In
1947, the school building burned and until a decision could be made
regarding building a new school, high school classes were held in the
courthouse and grade school children attended school in churches and
other buildings in town. The present brick building for the
elementary school was erected in 1949. The multipurpose addition
was constructed in 1981. The present Peaceful Plains school was
built in 1965 with an addition that doubled classroom space built in
1981. This school has operated continuously since 1979. The
present high school facility was built in various stages starting in
1951. Additions were added in 1954, the new gym and classrooms
build in 1966, and the new shop was constructed in 1984. In 1976
an asphalt track was built on the west edge of town. In the summer
of 1994, existing underground fuel tanks were removed and replaced with
above ground tanks. Also during the 1994-95 school year both
school facilities had new fire alarm systems installed to meet state
fire marshall orders. Several projects have been completed to
improve the aesthetic appearance of the facilities. In the High
School a new entryway renovation has been completed and rooms are being
renovated on a rotation schedule. New carpet in the halls and five
rooms to date have been done. The FCS room has been tile and
remodeled. A new scoreboard was installed on the south end
of the new gym in September 1996 and each year the Gym floor is
resurfaced to a mirror like finish. The Elementary School roof was
replaced with a pitched roof in 2004. The Peaceful Plains school
was completely repainted and gravel distributed around the foundation to
prevent sand blowout. We have high speed internet
available in all room of the schools. Phone modems are installed
for Brownlee, and Goosecreek. Peaceful Plains Schools also has
access. Currently a Distance Learning room is operational.
This will allows the school to receive classes and to send classes to
over 42 area schools as well as area colleges. The High School
received new carpets in the halls and new entry way tile was
installed as well as new paint in all the halls. The Art program
moved to the old shop building and this program was expanded. A
new English room and a teacher work room was created to better serve the
needs of the students and staff. A principal was hired in 2004
after over a decade of a single administrator operating the district.
The average enrollment based on the last five years, 2000-2001 school
year through the present 2005-2006 school year, of the three schools
combined is 125 students. These students are taught by 16
instructional staff members, a part time guidance counselor, a principal
and a superintendent. Of this staff over 40% are master teachers
and one holds a Specialist Degree. Thedford Schools offers
counseling services in guidance and career services. Fourteen
support staff personnel also serve the districts. (Secretaries,
custodians, cooks, para-educators, and bus drivers.) Class sizes
range from 2 to 14 with the average size being 11. A wide
range of class offerings is available as evidenced by our class
schedule. Parents involvement is very high with over 95%
attendance at Elementary PTC and over 75% Attendance at High School PTC.
We enjoy having our volunteers from the community and usually have
several serving the school system. Community support is high and
the schools are truly a central feature of Thomas County.
Thedford Schools operates a bussing system transporting students over
22,000 miles annually. Students travel as far as 43 miles to
school and several travel over 23 miles of single lane county roads.
The routes are driven with a combination of vans and busses.
Thedford also offers an activity route that is run after athletic
practices.
