Dismal River Near Thedford

Located just southeast of Thedford, is the Nebraska National Forest, with its unexpectedly lush green island in the middle of the Sandhills of central Nebraska. Being the largest man-made forest in the country, Nebraska National Forest consists of 90,000 acres of land, of which, 20,000 of those acres are covered with a lot of pine in defiance of nature.  Situated on the forest is the  Nebraska State 4H Camp. Located about 35 miles north of Thedford, Valentine National Wildlife Refuge is 71,516 acres in size and contains numerous lakes, marshes, and grasslands that provide habitat for many kinds of wildlife. Located about 60 miles northwest of Thedford, Merritt Reservoir is located on the Snake River and has 2,900 surface acres and a maximum depth of 106 feet with an average depth of 35 feet at full pool. Merritt is eleven miles long with 44 miles of shoreline. Merritt is one of the finest all-around fishing lakes in the mid west. Nebraska's newest large reservoir and the site of a major fish hatchery, Calamus Reservoir offers prime fishing and camping in the heart of the Sandhills, located about 85 miles east of Thedford. Located about 120 miles southwest of Thedford, Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area. Its 35,700 surface acres make it Nebraska's largest reservoir with over 100 miles of shoreline. At full storage, McConaughy is 20 miles long, four miles wide and 142 feet deep at the dam. The dam is among the largest of its type in the world, and the fish grow to trophy proportions, accounting for several state records. Even its nickname, "Big Mac" reflects its giant stature. The lakes and parks are well known for hunting, fishing, camping, photography, hiking and other outdoor pursuits. The Thedford area is renowned for outstanding hunting and abounds with deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, badgers, prairie dogs, sharp tailed grouse, prairie chickens, bobwhite quail, mourning doves, waterfowl and other wildlife.
